A historic Cox Plate at Flemington, another Melbourne Cup contender emerging and some outstanding performances at Royal Randwick made for a huge Saturday of spring racing.

Here's what caught our eye as the carnival rolls towards Derby Day and the Melbourne Cup.

Royal Randwick

Central Europe finally delivers

Central Europe finally shed his maiden tag in style, exploding clear to win the Group 3 Callander-Presnell (1600m) by more than three lengths.

The Chris Waller colt had been running into superstar Warwoven throughout the spring, and the drop in grade proved exactly what he needed.

Jason Collett produced a patient ride before unleashing the Frankel colt's impressive turn of foot. Why So Hard was brave in second and looks a horse with plenty of upside.

Lindermann joins racing royalty

What a remarkable old warrior Lindermann has become!

The Chris Waller seven-year-old completed a stunning hat-trick in the Group 2 Craven Plate (1800m), joining Phar Lap, Gloaming and Chatham as the only horses to win the race three times.

Nash Rawiller took control from the outset and never looked back, holding off Tom Kitten and Eliyass.

Ten career wins, more than $6 million in prizemoney and still going strong.

Proxima Dea remains perfect

Proxima Dea extended her unbeaten record to five from five with a brilliant staying performance in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

Zac Lloyd took the David Payne filly forward from a wide draw, and she simply outstayed her rivals to defeat Global Goal and Cormier.

The VRC Oaks (2500m) is now firmly in her sights, with Payne confident the extra distance will suit her perfectly.

Lazzura shows her class

Lazzura overcame a wide barrier and a demanding early run to claim the $2 million Invitation (1400m).

Tommy Berry made a bold decision to push forward from barrier 10, settling outside the leader before the Chris Waller mare kicked clear.

She held off a brave Infancy, with Verona Rose third and Gerringong fourth. A trip south for Melbourne Cup Week remains a possibility.

True Rebel puts Derby credentials on show

True Rebel strengthened his claims for next Saturday's Victoria Derby with a tough victory in the Group 2 Vase (2040m).

The Danny O'Brien galloper wore down Skua under Blake Shinn, showing plenty of determination despite his sprinting pedigree.

Shinn still has some reservations about the extra distance of the 2500m Derby, but the colt has earned his chance.

Smooth Chino gets his redemption

What a story for Austin Galati and Smooth Chino in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1200m)!

Three weeks after Galati was fined for easing up near the post in the Gilgai Stakes, the pair returned to Flemington and nailed the finish, defeating Mazu by a nose.

The victory ended Jigsaw's eight-race winning streak and delivered Galati and trainer Indianna Weinert their biggest career wins.

The Champions Sprint could be next for the $40,000 bargain buy.

Juja Kibo books his Melbourne Cup ticket

Juja Kibo secured his place in the Melbourne Cup with a brilliant victory in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m).

Cosmic Crusader conquers the Cox Plate

What a horse. What a story. What a Cox Plate!

Cosmic Crusader produced a magnificent performance to win the historic $6 million Cox Plate (2040m) at Flemington, giving trainer Andrea Leek and jockey William Pike the biggest victories of their careers.

Backing up just seven days after finishing fourth in the Caulfield Cup, the West Australian warrior stormed past Birdman and favourite Aeliana to claim Australia's weight-for-age championship.

It was a masterful preparation from Leek and a career-defining ride from Pike, while owner Bob Peters celebrated a victory in the race he has long dreamed of winning.
