Each Monday, Saturday Bound takes an early look at the weekend nominations, the likely fields and the first markets as the major players decide where they'll line up.

The Melbourne Cup is almost upon us, but first comes one of the great days of the Australian racing calendar. Victoria Derby Day at Flemington features three Group 1 races, with the Coolmore Stud Stakes, Victoria Derby and Empire Rose Stakes taking centre stage.

The three-year-old sprinters clash down the famous Flemington straight, the staying colts and geldings face their ultimate test over 2500m, and a strong group of mares lines up in the Empire Rose.

Meanwhile, Randwick hosts the $10 million Golden Eagle, where Sheza Alibi dominates the early betting, along with the Russell Balding Stakes and Sydney Gold Cup.

With several horses holding multiple nominations and final fields still to be confirmed, there's plenty to unfold before Saturday.

Flemington

G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) · 3YOs

The Coolmore Stud Stakes brings together Australia's leading three-year-old sprinters down the famous Flemington straight, with The Next Episode ($2.80) heading the early market.

The favourite has emerged as one of the most exciting young sprinters of the spring, but Saturday represents a significant challenge against a deep field of emerging talent.

Satono Glow ($4.50) is the main danger after establishing herself as a serious sprinting prospect. Her victory in the Cap D'Antibes at Flemington earlier in the spring demonstrated her ability down the straight course, an important advantage heading into Saturday.

St Gotthard ($6.00) is next in betting, while Natural Fling ($10.00) and Paradoxium ($10.00) round out the leading contenders.

With valuable Group 1 honours and enormous future stallion prospects at stake for the colts, the Coolmore remains one of the most important sprint races of the spring.

G1 Victoria Derby (2500m) · 3YOs

The Victoria Derby is the ultimate staying examination for the three-year-olds, with the step to 2500m often exposing those who have reached the end of their distance range.

Stormy Marco ($5.00) and True Rebel ($5.00) share favouritism in an open early market.

Stormy Marco comes through the Sydney three-year-old staying ranks and now faces the challenge of Flemington's demanding 2500m course.

Cormier ($7.00) is next in betting, followed by Hierarchy ($10.00) and Murshidi ($10.00).

Unlike many of the shorter-distance Group 1 races, the Derby is as much about stamina and temperament as raw ability. With several leading contenders still relatively inexperienced over staying trips, Saturday should provide a ripping contest.

G1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) · Mares

The Empire Rose looks one of the strongest mares' races of the spring, with Lady Shenandoah ($3.00) heading the market.

The Chris Waller-trained mare has already demonstrated her class at the highest level, and the return to a mile gives her another opportunity to add to her Group 1 record.

Surfin' Bird ($4.50) is the major challenger after continuing her impressive rise through the ranks. Her recent Flemington victory confirmed she belongs in stronger company, and Saturday presents the biggest test of her career.

Concord Connie ($7.00) is next in betting, ahead of Unleeshing ($8.00) and Lazzura ($9.00).

Lazzura also holds a nomination for the Russell Balding Stakes in Sydney, meaning connections have a decision to make before final acceptances.

The Empire Rose is a great clash between proven Group 1 performers and progressive mares looking to establish themselves at the elite level.

G2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) · 3YO fillies

The Wakeful Stakes is the traditional lead-up to the VRC Oaks (2500m) on Thursday, with the fillies stepping to 2000m before potentially backing up five days later.

De Armas ($4.00) heads the early market after featuring prominently throughout the spring three-year-old fillies' races.

Your Colour ($4.50) and Icelady ($5.00) are close behind, with Tharwa ($8.00) the next contender.

The Wakeful is often as much about what happens after the race as the result itself. Connections will be looking for strong finishing performances and clear signs that their fillies can handle another 500m in the Oaks.

G3 The Damien Oliver (1400m)

Named in honour of one of Australia's greatest jockeys, The Damien Oliver has attracted an open early market headed by Warnie ($6.00).

Pericles ($8.00) is next in betting, with the Godolphin gelding bringing an established record against high-quality opposition.

There is then a group of runners at $10.00, including King Zephyr, Persian Spirit, Private Eye, Steparty and War Machine.

Private Eye brings genuine Group 1 credentials, while several of his younger rivals are still building their records. The depth of the nominations suggests this could be one of the more competitive supporting races on Derby Day.

G3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) · 3YOs

The Carbine Club Stakes gives the three-year-olds another opportunity over the Flemington mile, with Ranarsson ($3.00) a clear early favourite.

The market has tightened considerably around the leading contender, suggesting strong confidence in his prospects ahead of final acceptances.

Unhinged ($5.00) is the second favourite, while De Armas ($8.00), Mister Whiskers ($8.00) and Regal Ambition ($8.00) are next in betting.

De Armas also holds a Wakeful Stakes nomination, while Regal Ambition comes through the Thousand Guineas pathway.

With several fillies holding alternative assignments, the final composition of the field will be particularly important.

Randwick

Golden Eagle (1500m) · 4YOs

The $10 million Golden Eagle is the centrepiece of Saturday's Randwick meeting, with Sheza Alibi ($1.70) dominating the early market.

The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained mare has been one of the standout performers of the spring, and the Golden Eagle has been a major target throughout her campaign.

Her brilliant Makybe Diva Stakes victory highlighted her exceptional talent, and the return to 1500m presents a very different assignment from the middle-distance racing she contested in Melbourne.

Autumn Boy ($7.00) is the clear second favourite, with Beiwacht ($8.00) and Skyhook ($9.00) next in betting.

Apocalyptic ($15.00) is also prominent after winning the Silver Eagle at Randwick earlier this month, earning her place in the Golden Eagle field.

The Golden Eagle has quickly become one of the great prizes of the Australian spring, and Sheza Alibi now has the opportunity to cement her reputation against some of the best four-year-olds in the country.

G3 Russell Balding Stakes (1300m)

The Russell Balding Stakes brings together an outstanding collection of sprinters, with Jimmysstar ($3.50) heading the early market.

The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding has established himself among Australia's leading short-course performers, and Saturday offers another opportunity to demonstrate his class after contesting The Everest.

Headwall ($5.00) and Ninja ($5.00) share the second line of betting, with Ninja also coming through The Everest.

Grafterburners ($7.00) is next, ahead of Headley Grange ($11.00).

The presence of several Everest runners makes this a particularly interesting contest, with the drop in grade providing an opportunity for those horses to return to winning form.

G3 Sydney Gold Cup (2000m)

The Sydney Gold Cup rounds out our look at Randwick, with Anthracite ($5.00) and Militarize ($5.00) sharing favouritism.

Militarize is a proven Group 1 performer who made his name during his three-year-old season, and the 2000m assignment gives him another opportunity to show his staying credentials.

Kovalica ($7.00) and Vivy Air ($7.00) are next in betting, with both having competed regularly in quality middle-distance company.

Barrengarry ($8.00) and Starzintheireyes ($8.00) are also prominent.
