Caulfield and Melbourne Cup weights released

Star galloper Sir Delius has been given topweight of 59kg for the 150th edition of the $6.55 million Sportsbet Caulfield Cup (2400m), with his absence from nominations for the 166th running of the $10.2 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) leading to different sets of weights for the iconic handicaps.

Without triple-Group 1 winner and natural topweight Sir Delius, reigning Caulfield and Melbourne Cup champion Half Yours has been allocated 59kg topweight for this year's Melbourne Cup with today's release of weights by Racing Victoria's (RV) Head of Handicapping, David Hegan.

Racing Victoria has the full weights for both Cups.

"He's a big, strong horse and, all being well, he will take his place..." Tony McEvoy said of Half Yours following the announcement of the Cup weights.

Seize The Day sidelined after bleeding

The immediate future of one of New Zealand's most valuable racehorses is in doubt after an untimely setback this week.

Last season's Group 1-winning juvenile Seize The Day has been forced out of the spring races after bleeding from both nostrils following a jumpout in Victoria on Monday.

Horses suffering from internal bleeding under the stress of exercise is not uncommon, not greatly different from a human having a bleeding nose or signs of blood in their trachea after a tough run or heavy weights session.

But for racehorses, the occurrence, known as Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage (EIPH), usually forces a three-month ban from racing, which is the case with Seize The Day.

That means he misses any opportunity to embellish his future stallion worth until next year.
