Saturday Bound: Autumn Glow is $1.20 in the Seven Stakes

Each Monday, Saturday Bound takes an early look at the weekend nominations, the likely fields and the first markets as the major players decide where they'll line up.

Spring keeps going through the gears on Saturday with a Group 1 double-header at Caulfield, while Randwick launches its Sydney Everest Carnival with a huge card featuring some of the best horses in the country.

G1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) — WFA

The Underwood is one of the first major middle-distance tests of the spring and an important checkpoint for horses heading towards races such as the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup.

Birdman ($3.50) and Cosmic Crusader ($3.50) share favouritism, with Buckaroo ($4.00) and Lindermann ($5.00) next.

Birdman and Buckaroo were both deliberately kept out of Saturday's Makybe Diva to tackle the Underwood second-up. Buckaroo has an outstanding record in the race, winning it in 2024 and finishing second last year, while Birdman won the Peter Young at Caulfield earlier this year.

Cosmic Crusader is already a Group 1 winner at 1800m and is on a Cox Plate path, making Saturday an important test of where he sits among the country's best middle-distance horses.

G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) — Handicap

The Sir Rupert Clarke returns to its traditional September position and once again becomes an important early-spring Group 1 handicap, with the Toorak Handicap three weeks later an obvious progression for the 1400m horses stretching towards a mile.

Lady Shenandoah ($4.00) is a clear early favourite ahead of Angel Capital ($8.00) and Regal Award ($9.00).

Angel Capital is particularly interesting. Connections came into the spring unsure whether he would head down an Everest or mile path, with his early performances set to determine his direction. The 1400m Sir Rupert Clarke would strongly point towards the latter.

G2 Seven Stakes (1600m)

Champion mare Autumn Glow ($1.20) completely dominates the market ahead of Ceolwulf ($7.00) and Gringotts ($10.00).

More importantly, we already know exactly why Autumn Glow is here. Connections have ruled out The Everest and mapped out a mile campaign, with the Seven Stakes her final lead-up into the $5 million King Charles III Stakes on October 17 before finishing her spring at Flemington.

At $1.20, the market is expecting nothing less than another dominant performance.

G2 The Shorts (1100m)

Now we get serious about The Everest.

Defending champion Joliestar ($4.00) returns in the race Chris Waller specifically identified as her preferred first-up run before another crack at The Everest. She won The Shorts last year before finishing fifth in The Everest.

Headwall ($3.40) heads the market after an outstanding first-up second to Tempted in the Concorde Stakes following almost a year away from racing. His connections now have a genuine decision between chasing an Everest slot or heading south for the Manikato.

Ninja ($4.50) is also firmly on an Everest campaign, with his program mapped out as The Shorts → Premiere Stakes → The Everest.

This might only be a Group 2, but in terms of The Everest picture it could be one of the most important races run before October 17.

G2 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m)

The stayers start getting serious in the Kingston Town, where Eliyass ($4.20) heads the early market from The Euphrates ($4.60) and Green Spaces ($5.50).

The 2000m is where the spring starts changing from preparation into genuine Cups qualification and positioning, and this race traditionally gives the staying horses an opportunity to push towards the longer features later in the carnival.

G2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m)

The Princess Series moves to 1400m and the picture is wide open.

Global Goal ($4.60) narrowly heads Chilly Girl ($4.80), with last-start Furious Stakes winner Bangkok Hottie ($5.00) and Striking Alibi ($5.00) right behind them.

Bangkok Hottie beat Chilly Girl and Striking Alibi in the Furious and trainer David Payne immediately confirmed the Tea Rose as her next target. From here, the Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m is the grand final of the Princess Series.

Global Goal has always looked like a filly likely to appreciate the distances increasing through the series, having caught the eye earlier in the spring when charging home from the rear.

This should tell us plenty about which filly wants the Flight Stakes mile.

Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m)

The Bill Ritchie is another race with a strong spring consequence, with Althoff ($4.20) heading the market from Sixties ($5.50) and Soothsayer ($7.00).

Althoff comes into the spring off an impressive 1500m Rosehill win, and Saturday represents another step up as he attempts to progress from handicap company towards the better mile races. His last-start performance rated among the better efforts on Memsie Stakes weekend.
