How to Read Form
What the numbers don't tell you
A form guide is a horse’s racing résumé. The best punters don’t simply look at finishing positions — they analyse every factor that influences performance.
Look beyond the numbers. A horse running sixth in a Group race may have performed better than one winning a weaker event.
Always ask: is today's race easier, harder or similar? Class is often the biggest factor.
Has the horse previously won or performed well over today's trip?
Some horses excel on wet tracks. Others only perform on firm ground.
Does today's draw suit the horse's racing pattern?
Has the horse been asked to carry significantly more or less weight than last start?
Leading jockeys often improve a horse's chances through race craft and decision-making.
Is the stable in form? Does the trainer have a strong record first-up or at this track?
Some horses perform best fresh. Others improve after one or two runs.
Understanding where runners are likely to settle helps predict race shape.
Strong closing sectionals often reveal horses ready to improve.
Watch race replays. Many horses perform much better than their finishing position suggests.
Some tracks favour leaders. Others suit backmarkers. Understanding bias can uncover value.
Late betting moves can provide useful information — but never rely solely on the market.
Ask yourself: is this the horse's target race?
Before betting, ask:

- ✓Right distance?
- ✓Handles today's track?
- ✓Good barrier?
- ✓Strong jockey?
- ✓Trainer in form?
- ✓Suitable speed map?
- ✓Fit enough?
- ✓Any excuses last start?
- ✓Is the current price value?
