The first green shoots of the Spring Carnival are showing this Saturday, headlined by the return of boom colt Angel Capital in the Missile Stakes at Randwick. Strong support races at Caulfield Heath and Morphettville round out the day, with several key runners resuming or building towards bigger spring targets.
Here's the day's features, and where the money has been going.
Caulfield Heath R3 β Sweeney Estate Agents (BM100), 1000m
Cavalry Girl drops sharply in grade after a dominant Listed Lightning Stakes win at Morphettville, where she led throughout and scored by 4.5 lengths. Bazaball Rewarded brings an outstanding 1000m record of seven wins from ten starts, while Beast Mode and Along The River are genuine winning hopes.
Market mover: Along The River, well supported from $9.00 into $7.00.
Caulfield Heath R8 β Travis Harrison Cup (BM100), 1800m
Magnaspin looks the likely leader after a brave second at Caulfield. Boniface charged home from the tail to run second at Randwick and looks ready to win, while Litzdeel resumes from a spell off a Group 1 Sydney Cup campaign and commands respect.
Market movers: Grand Pierro and Fine Future have both drawn strong support.
Randwick R7 β TAB Premier's Cup Prelude, 1800m
Last-start winner Tazima has been in outstanding form this campaign with four wins from seven starts and is the one to beat. Detonator Jack can bounce back after a forgive run in Melbourne, and Poison Chalice and Nellie Leylax both have claims.
Market mover: Boniface, heavily backed from $4.20 into $3.40.
Randwick R8 β Missile Stakes, 1200m
Midnight Dynamite is flying β four wins and six placings from six runs this preparation, off a dominant Winter Challenge victory. All eyes, though, will be on the return of Angel Capital, one of the most exciting horses of his generation, with Gangsta Granny and Ninja also resuming with strong claims.
Market mover: Midnight Dynamite, one of the biggest firmers of the day, from $15.00 into $8.50.
Morphettville R7 β Behemoth Stakes, 1200m
Sir Now has been ultra-consistent this preparation and looks ready to go one better after another strong second at Morphettville. Cicala will improve third-up, Vestas resumes for a new stable, and last-start winner Lingani is capable of finishing over the top again.
