Titans v Cowboys — the response game
This is the one everyone's circling. The Cowboys were left shell-shocked after conceding 82 points to the Sydney Roosters last week — a genuine low point that's put a target on their backs. But that scoreline reads worse than the side is. North Queensland get Griffin Neame back into the starting pack, with John Bateman and Ronald Philitoga named in the reserves, and a group with this much pride doesn't cop two of those in a row.
The Titans have had their moments at home and will back their outside backs to trouble anyone, but the desk isn't convinced their middle can hold up if the Cowboys turn up angry and complete their sets. Tom Dearden and a refreshed forward pack should have the wood on this one through the middle third. We're with the Cowboys to win and cover.
Scott Drinkwater is the man we want on our side here — he was still busy amid last week's wreckage, and against a Titans defence that leaks, his running game and involvement around the ruck make his points line the play we like most in this match.
Warriors v Panthers — Cleary in the cold
The pick of the Friday night football. The Warriors are a genuine top-four side at home and the Auckland crowd at Go Media Stadium will be firmly behind them. Penrith come in without Dylan Edwards, who remains sidelined by injury, meaning the Panthers again rely on a replacement fullback, and they've also lost Casey McLean.
Here's why the desk still leans Penrith: they have Nathan Cleary and a forward pack built to strangle a game in the back half. These teams met earlier this season when Penrith escaped with a 20-18 victory at CommBank Stadium — tight, and a win's a win. On the road against a quality Warriors outfit with a patched-up spine, though, asking Penrith to win by a converted try feels a bridge too far. We'll take Penrith straight up and leave the big line alone.
Dragons v Sharks — too much of a gap
Cronulla travel the short distance to Kogarah as one of the form packs in the competition. St George Illawarra have leaked heavily lately and simply don't have the cattle to match Cronulla's spine and forward pack over 80 minutes. This is a straightforward one for the desk — the Sharks, and we're happy to give away start to do it.
