Two top-six meetings headline the round, the ladder-leading Dockers make a rare trip to the MCG, and Sunday night hands us a straight-up shootout for the last finals seat. The Desk isn't tipping every game — just the ones where our read of the contest stacks up against the number.
Melbourne v Fremantle — the Dockers at the 'G
The best contest of the round on paper. Fremantle sit on top of the ladder and showed against the Bulldogs they can put distance on a side quickly, overcoming a challenge with a second-half blitz. But this is a rare away trip to the MCG, and Melbourne got their top-four push back on track with a gritty come-from-behind win over Gold Coast — trailing by 17 in the third before running out nine-point winners in a high-scoring finish.
That's the tension. Freo are the better team and the deserved market pick, but the venue and the Demons' record at the ground point to a tight, finals-style grind rather than a blowout. Our judges lean to the Dockers to win, but the handicap is where the value sits: with Melbourne at home, giving up more than ten and a half points is a big ask.
Brisbane v Hawthorn — double chance on the line
A genuine top-four eight-pointer at the Gabba. Brisbane will hope a shock thumping at the hands of Carlton was the loss it needed to have after seven consecutive victories had put it back among the premiership fancies. That 76-point loss is the wildcard here — it either sharpens them at home or exposes a side that had been winning on cruise control.
The Hawks are the danger — organised, hard at it, and firmly in the top-four conversation themselves. This is close to line-ball on quality, so the Gabba is the tie-breaker. The Desk is with Brisbane at home, backing a proud side to respond off a hiding in front of their own crowd.
Sydney v Port Adelaide — SCG homecoming
Not a contest to preview at length, but one to have a position on. Port Adelaide again showed it is not far off the mark in a 12-point defeat to Greater Western Sydney. They compete — but they don't score, and at the SCG against a Swans midfield finding its rhythm that's a problem. The Swans are getting their midfield balance right with Errol Gulden back in the side since Round 16 and Chad Warner among their best. Sydney to control this one at home.
St Kilda v Carlton — the elimination final
The one everyone circled. This is effectively an elimination final in the race for tenth spot: St Kilda has challenged several top sides over the past month without quite getting over the line, while Carlton produced one of the wins of the season by dismantling Brisbane, with Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh back to their best and improved team defence transforming their season — Carlton looks the better side right now.
That's the way the Desk reads it too. The Saints are tough at Marvel and won't go quietly with their season on the line, so this won't be pretty — but Carlton's midfield edge and the confidence flowing from that Brisbane result are the difference. We're with the Blues, and we accept it's a fight.
