Big Dog Set: Mepunga Summit leads our Topgun night selections

It's one of the biggest nights on the Australian greyhound racing calendar, with three Group 1 races taking centre stage at The Meadows. The Hume Cup Final, Topgun Stayers and Topgun Sprint bring together some of the fastest and most talented chasers in the country.

We've gone looking for the dogs with the strongest winning prospects, but also those capable of upsetting the market. Early speed, box draws and race patterns are crucial around The Meadows, and there are some opportunities beyond the obvious favourites.

Eight dogs make The Big Dogs Set tonight, with a mixture of strong confidence selections and a few runners who could deliver a result at a better price.

The Meadows – Race 3 – 7:22 PM AEDT

Mepunga Summit loves an inside draw, highlighted by two Sandown victories from box one during October, including a flying 29.31 performance. Milly Lily possesses serious early speed from box three, but Summit has the acceleration to hold the fence or settle immediately behind the leader. With the shortest route around the circuit and a class advantage over most of these rivals, he looks beautifully placed.

The Meadows – Race 4 – 7:41 PM AEDT

Mepunga Zircon has been tackling stronger opposition than he meets here and should appreciate the drop in class. Storm Shadow looks the likely leader from box seven, but Zircon's superior middle-race strength could prove decisive once the field settles. His three wins from six recent metropolitan appearances underline his consistency, and he looks well equipped to overcome the middle draw.

The Meadows – Race 6 – 8:24 PM AEDT

Gemma Keeping has been explosive in her past two starts over this track and distance, using blistering early speed to take control before her rivals could settle. Box three gives her another opportunity to attack the opening bend, although House Of Sins is a formidable opponent following a scorching 34.08 heat victory. In a Hume Cup Final packed with talent, Gemma Keeping's ability to establish an early advantage could be the difference.

The Meadows – Race 7 – 8:49 PM AEDT

Paw Stella produced an outstanding early sectional in her Hume Cup heat on Monday night, leading for much of the 600m journey before being run down. That effort suggests she can take another step forward with the experience under her belt, and box two provides an ideal opportunity to spear towards the lead. Paw Iowa and Ritza Sophie are talented opponents, but if Stella reproduces that early pace, they may have a serious job catching her.

The Meadows – Race 8 – 9:06 PM AEDT

Magpie Hector arrives at the Topgun Stayers chasing four consecutive victories and has established himself among the country's elite distance performers. His finishing strength is exceptional, and his record of five victories at The Meadows gives him an important advantage over several interstate rivals. Beautiful Child should be prominent from the rails, but Hector's ability to build momentum through the middle stages makes him the dog to beat over the demanding 730m.

The Meadows – Race 10 – 9:53 PM AEDT

The Topgun Sprint is loaded with early speed, and that could create an opportunity for Canya Talk Now to settle just behind the leaders before making his move. His recent form has been consistently strong, and box three provides a more favourable starting position than several of his biggest dangers. Pound Keeping will be prominent from the rails, while Wrongly Accused possesses a devastating finish, but Canya Talk Now has the tactical versatility to challenge both.

The Meadows – Race 11 – 10:19 PM AEDT

Prison Break has won six of his 12 starts from the red rug and has previously recorded a sharp 29.79 victory at The Meadows. Ash Intention possesses the early speed to cross from box eight, but Prison Break should enjoy an economical passage before bringing his superior finishing strength into play. If he stays within striking distance through the back straight, the inside draw could prove decisive.

The Meadows – Race 12 – 10:40 PM AEDT

Aston Commander is flying, with three consecutive victories culminating in a brilliant 27.89 Bendigo win, the fastest performance of the meeting. He produced that effort from the same outside draw he gets tonight, demonstrating his ability to accelerate into a prominent position without relying on an inside passage. Jetty Jumper is a serious threat from the rails, but Commander's explosive middle-race speed gives him an outstanding chance to finish the night on a winning note.
