It's Melbourne Cup Eve, and The Meadows serves up a cracking night of greyhound racing, headlined by six heats of the Hume Cup over 600m and the Group 3 Silver Bullet.

Some of the country's most exciting middle-distance performers are in action, with plenty of depth across the feature races. We've weighed up the recent form, early speed, box draws, track records and likely race patterns, while looking beyond the obvious favourites for runners capable of delivering a result at a better price.

Nine dogs make The Big Dogs Set tonight, including several strong winning chances and a handful of appealing value plays.

WatchDog are also having a "watchalong" on their YouTube channel and that can be viewed here.

2. Going NuclearHigh confidence

Going Nuclear looks well placed to continue his excellent run of form after winning four of his past ten starts at metropolitan level, including an impressive victory at The Meadows last time out. Box two should give him the opportunity to settle close to the speed without covering unnecessary ground, although Amron Dancer is a genuine danger. His proven track form and consistency give him a strong edge in this Grade 5 contest.

8. Radar O'ReillyMedium confidence

Radar O'Reilly appeals as an interesting alternative to Vista Weird in the opening Hume Cup heat. He's a proven performer at The Meadows with experience in strong company, and the outside draw may allow him to stay clear of the early congestion expected through the middle boxes. Vista Weird possesses dangerous mid-race speed, but Radar O'Reilly has the ability to work into a prominent position and make this a genuine contest.

6. Steal The StageMedium confidence
Best Value Dog

Steal The Stage looks one of the night's more attractive prospects in a competitive Hume Cup heat. His explosive early speed is the key, and there's every chance he can cross the inside runners if he begins cleanly. Blue Storm and House Of Sins have excellent credentials, but both need things to fall their way early, while Steal The Stage has the pace to take control and give his rivals something to chase.

7. EspoirMedium confidence

Espoir's record of four wins from five starts over the Meadows 600m is difficult to overlook, particularly in a race where several leading chances have questions to answer. Mepunga Donna has the better inside draw and Eventuate possesses genuine early speed, but Espoir has demonstrated that this circuit and distance are ideally suited to his racing style. If he can negotiate the opening bend without losing ground, his proven middle-distance ability makes him a serious winning contender.

3. Mepunga EnvyHigh confidence
Big Dog of the Night

Mepunga Envy looks one of the strongest selections on the program after producing consecutive victories at The Meadows and Sandown Park. His impressive 600m win at this circuit demonstrated both early pace and the strength to sustain a powerful run, while box three provides an excellent opportunity to establish a forward position. Ritza Sophie is the obvious danger, but Mepunga Envy looks capable of controlling the race before the field reaches the back straight.

7. Gemma KeepingMedium confidence

Gemma Keeping has been racing with tremendous consistency, winning twice this campaign and finishing in the placings at her other recent appearances. Her latest victory over this course and distance is particularly encouraging, and she looks capable of overcoming the wide draw if she begins cleanly. Hurricane is a major threat from the rails, but Gemma Keeping's recent winning form and proven 600m ability make her a compelling alternative in one of the night's most competitive heats.

The Meadows – Race 8 – 9:31pm AEDT

6. Whiskey WhiskersMedium confidence

Whiskey Whiskers arrives chasing a fourth consecutive victory after another impressive performance at Sandown Park. His strong Meadows record and proven ability over 600m suggest he's well equipped for this assignment, while box six gives him room to build momentum if he begins cleanly. Cobble Hill is flying and deserves favouritism, but Whiskey Whiskers has the early speed and sustained strength to make this much closer than it might appear.

The Meadows – Race 9 – 9:57pm AEDT

3. Storm HustlerHigh confidence

Storm Hustler looks primed for a major performance in the Group 3 Silver Bullet after consecutive victories at Warragul and Wentworth Park. His explosive acceleration from the boxes is his greatest weapon, and the draw gives him an opportunity to establish a commanding position through the opening stages. He's A Pearl and On The Prowl are formidable opponents, but if Storm Hustler produces his customary beginning, he could have this race in his keeping before the home turn.

The Meadows – Race 12 – 10:57pm AEDT

4. Compton GypsyMedium confidence

Compton Gypsy has the opportunity to bounce back from a disappointing latest performance in the final race of the night. Her early speed and previous success from box four are significant positives, particularly against opposition with inconsistent recent form. Galleywood is the main danger following an impressive Meadows victory two starts ago, but Compton Gypsy has the tactical speed to take control if she steps cleanly.

The Big Dogs – final rankings

Big Dog of the Night

Mepunga Envy β€” The Meadows – Race 6 – Box 3 – 8:47pm AEDT

Two consecutive victories, proven 600m form and an excellent draw make Mepunga Envy our strongest winning selection. His combination of early speed and middle-distance strength gives him a decisive advantage if he can find clear running through the opening turn.

Best Value Dog

Steal The Stage β€” The Meadows – Race 4 – Box 6 – 8:02pm AEDT

His explosive early speed creates a genuine opportunity to control this Hume Cup heat. The inside runners have strong credentials, but Steal The Stage looks capable of turning the race into a test of their chasing ability rather than their finishing strength.
